Can an agent do cold email?

MOSTLYAgent does it, you sign off

Mostly. An agent researches, writes, sequences and follows up better than most humans do at volume. Keep a person on the send button until you trust the list, because the failure mode is reputational rather than merely wasteful.

Step by step

A job is never one task. Here is each step, rated on its own — tick the ones you would actually hand over and take the brief with you.

StepHand over?
  • Research the recipient

    YES

Actually reads their content and their company, which is what separates a reply from a delete.

  • Write the email

    MOSTLY

Good on structure and relevance. Set your voice once or everything sounds like a press release.

  • Sequence and time

    YES

Multi-touch, multi-angle, correctly spaced, without the human drop-off after touch two.

  • Handle replies

    MOSTLY

Routes interest to you and handles logistics itself. Objections should reach a person.

  • Manage deliverability

    YES

Warms domains, respects limits, watches bounce rates — the unglamorous part humans skip.

  • Deciding the offer

    NOT YET

No amount of writing quality rescues a proposition nobody wants.

    Yours

3/5 steps selected. Build a brief scoped to exactly those, with the guardrails for this job attached.

What still needs you

  • The offer
  • The list
  • Any reply with emotion in it

How this goes wrong

Scaling before validating. A hundred sends a day of a message that does not work teaches you nothing and costs you a domain. Prove the message at twenty a day by hand first.

What it needs access to

  • Sending tool
  • CRM
  • Enrichment
  • Domain and DNS access
  • Web search

Read access to all of it, write access to as little as possible. Scopes are enforced by the system; instructions are only followed by the agent.

The prompt

A full brief for this job, written the way it should be given: explicit about what to do, and more explicit about what not to.

cold-email.brief

You are my outreach agent. For each contact on the approved list, research them properly — their role, their company’s recent moves, anything they have published — and write a first email under 120 words: one specific observation about them, one sentence on the problem we solve, one low-friction ask. No flattery, no "I hope this finds you well", no fake familiarity. If you cannot find a genuine reason to write, skip them and tell me. Build a four-touch sequence over three weeks, each touch a new angle rather than a bump. Show me every batch before sending. Route any reply containing an objection, a complaint or a question about price straight to me, unanswered.

Questions people ask

Will recipients know it was written by AI?

They will if it is generic, and they mostly will not if the research is real and the ask is specific. The tell is never the prose quality — it is that the email could have been sent to anyone.

Is this legal?

B2B cold email is lawful in most jurisdictions with conditions — a clear identity, a working opt-out, and under GDPR a legitimate-interest basis you can actually defend. An agent will follow the rules you give it and has no instinct for where the line is, so give it explicit ones.

Want the part that works actually running?

The brief above is the easy half. The other half is connecting it to Sending tool and CRM, holding it inside the boundaries on this page, and having somewhere the exceptions land where you will actually see them. That is what Ogento does.
