Can an agent do ?

One question, asked about every job people are trying to hand to an AI agent. Not “could it help” — could it do the job. Four verdicts, every step broken down, and an honest list of what still needs a person.

Hours are per person doing that job, counting only the steps we rate as agent-ready. Nobody does all 65 of these jobs, so read the total as the size of the category rather than a promise about your calendar.

YES19
An agent does the whole job. You look at the output, not the work.
MOSTLY25
An agent does the work and hands you a decision. Minutes a day, not hours.
HALF14
An agent clears the mechanical majority. The part people are paid for stays yours.
NOT YET7
An agent can assist around the edges. Handing it the job would be a mistake.

By industry

The same question, scoped to how a particular business actually runs — and which job to hand over first.

Ecommerce

Most of the operating work, yes. Support, order chasing, returns, listings, inventory and reporting are all agent-ready. Buying decisions, brand and supplier relationships are not — which is roughly what a good ecommerce owner should have been spending their time on anyway.

Agencies

Not run one, but it can take back most of the non-billable week. Reporting, invoicing, project admin, proposals, research and QA are agent work. Client relationships and creative judgement — the two things clients actually pay for — are not.

14 jobs rated

SaaS

A large share of the operating functions, yes. Support, QA, documentation, CRM hygiene, reporting, lifecycle email and bug triage are all agent-ready. Product decisions, architecture and the customer relationships that renew contracts are not.

14 jobs rated

Small business

It can run the back office, which for most small businesses is the difference between working evenings and not. Invoicing, bookkeeping, admin, scheduling, chasing and basic customer service are all agent work today.

12 jobs rated

Professional services

The preparation, not the advice. Research, document review, drafting, chronologies, admin and compliance tracking are agent work. Signing, advising and carrying professional liability remain human by both practice and regulation.

13 jobs rated

Healthcare

The administration, yes — scheduling, records, coding, correspondence and reminders. Anything clinical, and anything that touches a patient in distress, should not be automated. The regulatory bar here is higher than anywhere else on this site.

8 jobs rated

Construction and trades

The paperwork, which on most sites is the real bottleneck. Quotes, invoices, purchase orders, compliance certificates, supplier chasing and scheduling are agent work. Nothing on site is.

11 jobs rated

Restaurants and hospitality

The back office, yes. Bookings, supplier orders, rotas, invoices, reviews and stock are agent work. The floor, the kitchen and the welcome are not, and in hospitality those are the entire product.

9 jobs rated

Logistics and transport

The documentation and coordination layer, yes. Consignment paperwork, tracking, exception chasing, customs documents and invoice reconciliation are agent work. Physical operations and carrier relationships are not.

Real estate

The coordination and paperwork, yes — enquiries, viewings, listings, contracts, compliance documents and chasing. Valuing a property and closing a sale stay human, because both turn on judgement about people as much as about buildings.

Nonprofits and charities

A great deal of it, and the case is unusually strong because every hour saved goes straight back to the mission. Donor admin, grant paperwork, reporting, bookkeeping and scheduling are all agent work. Fundraising relationships are not.

11 jobs rated

Media and publishing

The production layer, yes. Transcription, repurposing, SEO, scheduling, translation and archive work are agent-ready. Reporting, judgement about what is true, and having something worth saying are not.

Why the answer is usually half

Almost nobody has a job that is one task. “Accounting” is nine things, and an agent is excellent at six of them, adequate at two, and should not be allowed near the ninth. Asking whether an agent can do a job gets you an argument. Asking which steps it can do gets you a plan.

So every page here breaks the job into steps and rates each one. The verdict at the top is just the summary.
