Can an agent do graphic design?

HALFThe grind yes, the judgement no

Half. Production design — resizing, adapting, generating variations within an established system — is agent work. Creating the system, and knowing which of a hundred options is right, is not.

Step by step

A job is never one task. Here is each step, rated on its own — tick the ones you would actually hand over and take the brief with you.

StepHand over?
  • Resize and adapt

    YES

One asset into every format and aspect ratio. The tedious majority of production design.

  • Generate variations in a system

    YES

Given real brand rules, dozens of on-brand options quickly.

  • Produce imagery

    MOSTLY

Good and generic. Increasingly recognisable as generated, which is now a brand risk in itself.

  • Check accessibility

    YES

Contrast, text size, colour independence — done properly rather than intended.

  • Create a brand identity

    NOT YET

Identity is a strategic argument expressed visually. It produces plausible logos and no argument.

  • Know which one is right

    NOT YET

Taste is the job. Generation was never the bottleneck.

What still needs you

  • Identity and system design
  • Selection and taste
  • Anything that defines how the brand looks

How this goes wrong

Looking like everything else. Generated visuals converge on a recognisable house style, and a brand built from them reads as a brand with nothing to say.

What it needs access to

  • Design tool with API
  • Brand assets
  • Asset storage
  • CMS

Read access to all of it, write access to as little as possible. Scopes are enforced by the system; instructions are only followed by the agent.

The prompt

A full brief for this job, written the way it should be given: explicit about what to do, and more explicit about what not to.

graphic-design.brief

You are my production design agent. Using the brand system in Figma — the defined colours, type scale, spacing and component library, nothing outside it — adapt approved assets into every required format and size. Generate up to five variations of any layout I request, all within the system. Check every output for WCAG AA contrast and flag failures. Never invent a new colour, typeface or visual style. Never generate photographic imagery of people. Present options; I choose.

Questions people ask

Can it replace a designer?

It replaces production hours, which is a large share of a junior designer’s work. The senior work — deciding what the brand should look like and why — is unaffected and arguably more valuable now that everything else is cheap.

Want the part that works actually running?

The brief above is the easy half. The other half is connecting it to Design tool with API and Brand assets, holding it inside the boundaries on this page, and having somewhere the exceptions land where you will actually see them. That is what Ogento does.
